Past History of Scouting at Visitation Parish

TROOP 7:  The Boy Scout program began in Visitation Catholic Parish in December 1931, with Father Anthony, O.B.S, as the Executive Officer.  The official BSA membership roster of 1937 showed there were 12 scouts and 6 adults registered in Troop 7 that was chartered to the Knights of Columbus, Council 809, Visitation Catholic Church.  The scouts met at Visitation School on Thursday evenings with Scoutmaster A.L. Leppert.

Boy Scouting in Troop 7 continued until 1967 when the membership roster showed James E. George was Scoutmaster for 14 Scouts and 4 adults which met in the Church Scout Room.  The charter organization was the Visitation Men's Club and Russell C. Beals was the Executive Officer.

Ironically this is the same year that Pack 7, also chartered to Visitation Catholic church, ended their scouting program for Cub Scouts.

Current History (Troop 10)

TROOP 10:  Boy Scout Troop 10 was formed when a group of scout leaders and adults from Cub Scout Pack 10 wanted to provide Cub Scouts graduating from Pack 10 the opportunity to continue their scouting adventure as Boy Scouts.  Although there were other good troops in the Tacoma area, parents felt the quality of scout leadership and support provided by Visitation Parish would provide their sons the best scouting environment.

Planning started in earnest in 2004 when Pastor Tom Williams and Parish Administrator Kate Amundson approved the formation of an organizing committee to identify potential troop leadership, facilities that would be needed, and the cost to start a new troop.

In early 2005 the organizing committee met with Father Tom and Mrs. Amundson to present the following plan:

             Potential Scout Leadership:

             Father Tom Williams     Executive Officer

Mrs. Kate Amundson     Charter Organization Rep

            Toby Dinkins                 Scoutmaster

            Joe Leister                    Assistant Scoutmaster

            Bill Loughridge              Assistant Scoutmaster

            Peter Van Rosendale     Committee Chairman

            Kristin Lyons                 Treasurer

            Sherry Drake                 Advancements

            Roger Lyons                  Committee Member

Available Facilities:  Weekly troop meetings would be held in Visitation’s Upper Hall on Monday’s at 7pm.  Committee meetings would occur on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7pm in the Lower Hall.

Start-Up Funding:  Initial money for charter fees, troop flags, and insignia was donated by Cub Scout Pack 10, The Knights of Columbus, and private donors.

On March 31, 2005 Father Tom signed the New Unit and Unit Leader Applications.  Scoutmaster Toby signed the Boy Scout Applications for five new scouts.  The paperwork was delivered to Pacific Harbors Council and Boy Scout Troop 10 was born.
